O’Dea, MI standouts first from Washington to be selected in pro lacrosse draft

SEATTLE – Former Seattle-area prep standouts Drew Snider and Greg Mahony became the first high school lacrosse players from Washington state to be drafted by a professional lacrosse league with their selection on Friday in the 2012 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) collegiate entry draft.

Snider, a 2006 graduate of Seattle’s O’Dea High School and fifth-year senior at the University of Maryland was selected 45th overall by the Chesapeake Bayhawks, while Mahony, a 2007 graduate of Mercer Island High School and 2011 graduate of Yale was selected 56th overall by the 2011 MLL champion Boston Cannons.

The league’s 12th annual draft was held Friday, January 13 in conjunction with the US Lacrosse annual convention in Philadelphia.

Snider, a 6-0, 175-pound starting midfielder at Maryland, scored 17 goals and 3 assists in 18 games during his senior season helping the Terrapins advance all the way to the 2011 NCAA Division I men’s championship game. In high school, Snider played lacrosse for neighboring Garfield High School where he was a two-time All-American selection and led the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association in scoring all four years. As a senior, his play helped the Bulldogs advance to the semifinal round of the 2006 Washington Lacrosse Boys Division I state tournament.

Mahony was a two-time All-Ivy and All-New England honoree at Yale. In 2011, the 5-8, 175-pound senior midfielder was third in scoring with 16 goals and 8 assists in 14 games helping the Bulldogs advance to the semifinal round of the Ivy League men’s lacrosse tournament. At Mercer Island, he was a three-year letterwinner in football, swimming and lacrosse where he was a two-time first team All-State selection and finished second in league scoring as a senior helping the Islanders advance to the title game of the boys Division I Washington state lacrosse tournament. Mahony was also an All-State honoree in football and three-time state champion in swimming for the Islanders. In 2006-2007 he was named Mercer Island High School Male Athlete of the Year.

Snider and Mahony are just the second and third lacrosse players with high school experience in Washington state to play professionally. Chris Taylor, a 2005 graduate of Mercer Island High School and 2008 Georgetown graduate was the first. Undrafted, Taylor played during the 2009 season for the MLL Chesapeake Bayhawks franchise.

SEATTLE -- Eastside Catholic sophomore Colin MacIlvennie of Maple Valley, Wash. has been named to the West team for the 2012 Under Armour Underclass All-Star Lacrosse Tournament.

MacIlvennie, who plays midfield for the Crusaders, is the only player from Washington state and one of just five sophomores to be selected to the squad of high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors for the national tournament.

The West squad includes 15 players from California, five from Colorado, two from Nevada and one from Arizona. One hundred, fifty-three students from high schools in seven western states were invited to tryout for the team January 6 in San Diego.

“This was an especially strong tryout this year. Our team of 16 evaluators was really impressed by many of the players’ hustle, determination and performance throughout the night,” said West head Coach Alex Cade (Coronado High School, Calif.) “It was a very tough process and ultimately we could only choose 24 of the incredibly talented players at this tryout.”

The West squad will compete against teams from Baltimore, Long Island, Midwest, New England, New Jersey, Philadelphia, South, Upstate New York, and Washington, D.C.

SEATTLE – Mercer Island goaltender Brian Bernstein stopped 14 shots to hold Bainbridge’s offense at bay as the Islanders powered to the 2011 boys Division I Washington state high school lacrosse championship with a 5 - 3 defeat of the Spartans, Saturday before 2,250 at Seattle’s Memorial Stadium.

The win gave the Islanders their fifth overall state championship. The Islanders last won the state title in 2006. Matthew Shields and Zac Stickney each scored 2 goals and Doug Mahoney scored a solo goal. Bernstein had 14 saves in goal for the Islanders.

“Our defense won this game for us,” said Islander coach Ian O’Hearn who notched his fourth state title at the helm of the Islanders’ program. “Bernstein was a brick wall for us.”

With 14 saves on the night, Bernstein who averaged a 65 percent save percentage in six games, was stellar in goal turning away goal after goal.

Following a game opening goal by Bainbridge sophomore Jacob Knostman at 10:49 of the first, the Islanders responded on a Zac Stickney goal just under a minute late to tie the game. Matthew Shields converted a Doug Mahony pass at 7:51 take the lead and just 44 seconds later put the Islanders up 3 – 1.

With the teams exchanging possessions in the second, the Islanders added another goal at 1:43 to take a 4 -1 lead into the half.

“At half time we were emotionally falling apart,” said Bainbridge senior defender Quinn McMahon. “At the half we were right there and decided to straighten ourselves out. The first quarter go to our heads.”

In the third, Bainbridge found itself with several opportunities in the Mercer Island zone, but was unable to convert as the longpole defensive of senior Ryan Blumenstein, Alex Medlock and TJ Blackburn forced the Spartans off their game.

Strong goaltending by Spartan freshman Reynolds Yarborough kept Bainbridge in the game. “Going into the game I was terrified,” said Yarborough a late season choice by Spartan coach Jack Visco to take over net minding from Julian Skotheim. “The first shot I missed and said ‘OK” that one,” said Reynolds. “My defense held me in the game.

Just 20 seconds into the fourth, the Islanders extended their lead to 5 – 1 before Bainbridge narrowed the lead to 5 – 3 on goals by Alex Crane at 10:59 and again at 4:58. But that was all for the Spartans as the Islanders hung on for the win.

For Mercer Island, Shields finished with 2 goals and 3 ground balls and Stickney and Doug Mahony each had a goal. Bainbridge’s Alex Crane finished with 2 goals and 3 ground balls, while Knostman had a solo goal and Yarbrough had 8 saves.

Bainbridge finished the season 18-3-0, while the Islanders finished at 21-2-0.

SEATTLE – Led by senior JD Chapman’s four goals and a smothering defense, Woodinville outlasted Sammamish 10 – 7 to secure a perfect season and capture their first Washington state Division II lacrosse championship, Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.

The win gave the upstart Woodinville program and second-year coach Gavin Molitor their first state title in just their second year of play.

“There was no single hero in this game. This championship was won a s a complete team,” said Molitor, who built the Falcons’ squad around a dozen Woodinville players who had played with him at the Division II Northshore program two years ago.

“There is a part of this win that goes back two years. We wanted to build in our commitment of winning in this community,” said Molitor. “It’s a victory not just for this team but for the 170 kids in our youth program, our parents and the Woodinville community. It feels unreal.”

Woodinville used a combination of offensive scoring and relentless defense that both gave the Falcons the early lead and held Sammamish senior attackman Tyvan Schmidt to just one goal.

Chapman, who anchors the offensive line on the Falcon’s football squad as a center, was the driving force on offense for the Falcons.

We really came together as a team,” said Chapman, who led the Falcons in regular season scoring with 41 goals and 32 assists. “Our defensive play was solid all year. They all produced for us. Today, they made the difference.”

Chapman opened scoring at 9:20 of the first, connecting on the lead score of two Falcon goals in the quarter, giving the Falcons a 2 -1 lead going into the second quarter. In the second, Sammamish’s Schmidt tied the game at 10:19 before Colter Clinch and Chapman again put Woodinville up by 2 goals 4-2. Followed by a Brian Headland goal to again bring the game to within one for Sammamish, Chapman scored his third goal of the night to give the Falcons a 5 – 3 lead. Following a Woodinville timeout, Sammamish’s Neil Hones scored his first of the night to again narrow the lead to 5-4 at halftime.

In the third, Chapman broke nearly a six-minute scoring drought with a shot past Sammamish’s goaltender Morgan White at 5:58. Just over a minute later, William Prostka added the Falcon’s seventh goal. Sammamish would add two more including a Tyler Wright score with 32 seconds remaining in the quarter to narrow the lead to 8 -6 going into the final quarter. But it the final quarter Woodinville added two more to take a 10 – 6 lead before Sammamish’s Neil Hones, who had 9 shots on the night, connected for his third goal with just 23 seconds remaining on a man-up opportunity to close out the game.

“They played great ‘D’,” said Sammamish’s Schmidt, who connected on only his single goal despite getting off 7 attempts. “Maybe they wanted it more. “Overall they are a great team. They earned it.”

For Woodinville, Chapman had 2 assists and a ground ball while Clinch and Daniel McKee each netted 2 goals. Dalton Combs led the Falcons on defense with 14 ground balls. For Sammamish, Neil Hones netted 3 goals, Matt Young had a goal and 8 ground balls and Schmidt finished with a goal and 3 ground balls.

Woodinville finished the season at 18-0-0, while Sammamish, dropping just their second game of the year, finished at 19-2-0.

Washington Lacrosse Girls High School State Championships: Bainbridge, Bellevue East capture state titles

Girls Division I Final

Bainbridge unseats Lakeside as state Division I lacrosse champion

SAMMAMISH – Jaclyn Biggers led the way with 4 goals and sophomore goaltender Madeline Stevenson had 9 saves as Bainbridge unseated five-time defending state champion Lakeside to capture the girls Division I state high school lacrosse championship, Saturday at Charlie Acosta Field of the campus of the Eastside Catholic School in Sammamish.

The win sealed a perfect 14-0-0 season for the Spartans and threw the monkey off the back of a Bainbridge squad that has dropped a series of state title games to the Lions in past years.

“We had some real help in dealing with the mental part of the game,” said Tommila, whose team dropped last year’s title game to the Lions 15 – 10 along with, a 14 – 13 double overtime heartbreaker in 2009 and a 9 – 8 defeat in 2008. “We took the negative moments and funneled them into positives.”

The title comes on the heels of an 18 – 12 regular season win over the Lions in April and is the eighth overall state title for Bainbridge, evening the Spartans with Lakeside for overall state title wins.

Right from the opening draw, Bainbridge came to play as the Spartans reeled off the game’s first eight goals including two rapid-fire scores by midfielders Bea Sheffer and Biggers in the first 30 seconds of play. Biggers, playing in her final game for the Spartans, notched 3 more on the day to increase her season scoring total to 60.

“We were pumped in the locker room and pumped after our 6 a.m. practice yesterday morning,” said Tommila. “We dictated the face of the game from the beginning.”

After the fifth goal, a Theo Fehsenfeld solo shot at 14:05, Lakeside coach Jamie Asaka, called a time out to settle her young team. The pause had little effect as Fehsenfeld hit two more as play resumed, igniting the Spartans to six of the next eight goals to finish the half at 10 – 3.

Throughout the game, as often as the Spartans scored, their goaltender played with the confidence and swagger of a seasoned veteran. With 9 saves on the afternoon, Stevenson came up big facing a barrage of 14 Lions shots in the first and 17 more in the second.

“(Stevenson) was really aggressive out there,” said Tommila whose defense scattered the Lions attack for most of the game. “She knew where her shots were coming from all afternoon. She was in a real zone.”

In the second, Sheffer, Biggers, Fehsenfeld and Mackin netted the first four for Bainbridge before Lakeside got back in the game.

The Lions scored five of the final seven goals beginning with a Sarah Drucker shot at 14:42 and back-to-back goals by sophomore attack Sammy McGanney and senior midfielder Emma Dorland at 13:26 and 11:23, but were never able to climb back into contention. The Lions closed out scoring with solo shots by senior midfielder Nikki Kiga and sophomore middie Kaylee Best solo shots in the final five minutes of play.

Lakeside, which started six sophomores during the season, finished the year uncharacteristically in third place in the Northeast Conference with a 7-2-2 record. “People were surprised that we were in the final,” said Lions head coach Jamie Asaka.

Despite its young team, the Lions took charge in the playoffs, dispatching Mercer Island 11 – 9 in the quarterfinals before taking care of powerful Snohomish in the semifinals to earn a trip to the title game.
“It’s not a fluke that they played in the state title game,” said Tommila. “They have heart.”

Biggers finished the night and her Bainbridge career with 4 goals and an assist, while Kelsey Mackin, and Fehsenfeld each scored 3 goals. For Lakeside, Kaylee Best scored 3 goals and Sarah Drucker, Sammy McGanney, Emma Dorland, Rebecca Long and Nikki Kiga all had single goals, while Madeline Hurlbut had 7 saves in goal.

SAMMAMISH – Freshman Camille Sullivan scored the game winner with 7 seconds to go in overtime to give first year coach Craig Van der Horn and Bellevue East their first girls state championship with a 17 – 16 defeat of the Overlake School in the Washington Lacrosse Girls Division II State Championship, Saturday at Charlie Acosta Field on the Campus of the Eastside Catholic School in Sammamish.

The game wining goal was the seventh of the afternoon for the Sullivan and tied her season’s best – 7 goals in the home quarterfinal win over Bainbridge’s Division II squad. For Bellevue East, which draws students from five Bellevue high schools including Interlake, Newport and Sammamish, the title proved to be the high point in the fledgling four-year-old program’s history.

“The win feels incredible,” said Van der Horn. “The girls kept proving to me that they could work hard .

Fatigued and besieged with basic ball handling errors in the first half after the ordeal of a triple overtime 17 – 16 defeat of Klahowya in Wednesday’s semifinal, Bellevue East struggled to control the ball, finally slipping behind the Owls by six on an AD Gildner goal with 7:32 remaining in the half.

“They never showed us their game in the first half,” said Overlake head coach Sue Haviland. “They have so much talent – their stick skills and vision of the field are exceptional. Two weeks ago we had two halves of that. Today, with that margin, I felt like we were playing 0 – 0. I wasn’t comfortable in the slightest.”

Bellevue East responded to the challenge of falling behind, delivering three of the next four goals finished off by a Paige Romney score with just 4 seconds remaining to narrow the gap to 10 – 6 at the half.

“They were still dealing with nerves (in the first half),” said Van der Horn, who made the switch to a controlled offense midway through the first to rebuild the confidence of this squad. “I really had a belief in the team – that they could pull this off.”

The difference was noticeable. After scoring three of the final four goals of the first half to narrow the Owls’ lead to 10 – 6 at the half, Bellevue East began pecking away at the Owls lead in the second, scoring 7 of the first 8 goals of the half to take the lead for the first time 12 – 11 on an Elizabeth Soffey shot at 12:50.

The Owls rebounded with the next three back-to-back capped by Kerri Smith whipping a backhanded shot past Samantha Gunnerson with 7:37 remaining to take a 14 – 12 lead, but Bellevue East responded on three Sullivan goals over the next 3 minutes to take a one goal lead going into the final minute.

In the final seconds, with the game seemingly in hand, the Owls Grace Grubb snatched a Zoe Pinczower pass and fired a shot past East goaltender Quinn Phillips with just 1 second remaining in regulation to force overtime.

In the first 3-minute overtime half, Silverman gave Overlake a 16 – 15 advantage on a solo shot with 1:51 remaining. After changing sides, Kayla Miller evened the score at 16 with 2:49 remaining. East bounced several shots wide of the goal before Miller hit the winner with just 7 seconds left.

For Bellevue East Sullivan finished with 7 goals, 2 assists and 9 ground balls to lead all scorers and Kayla Miller netted 5 goals and an assist while Samantha Gunnerson had 12 saves in goal. Overlake Kerri Smith led the Owls with 4 goals and 3 assists while Grace Grubb, Sarah Silverman and Mariel Frank each had 3 goals. Quinn Phillips had 4 saves in goal for the Owls.

Overlake finished the season with a 13-2-0 record. On the way to the state championship, the Owls finished the season winning their last seven games including a 14 – 12 decision over Wenatchee and a 15 – 2 defeat of Mercer Island. Once in the state tournament, the Owls went to work, notching a 19 – 3 quarterfinal win over Kennedy and downing Garfield 19 – 15 to earn a berth in the title game.

Despite dropping two of its last three games of the season on losses to the Owls and Lake Sammamish, Bellevue East rose to the occasion in the playoffs, dispatching Bainbridge in the opening round then Klahowya in a triple overtime victory to land in the final game. Bellevue east finished the season 13-2-0.

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND – Emily Mincin scored a hat trick in the final 10 minutes of regulation as Issaquah rallied for 6 of the final 7 goals of the game, but fell just short as Bainbridge escaped with a 13 – 12 girls Division I lacrosse semifinal playoff win, Wednesday at Bainbridge High School.

The victory preserved an undefeated record for the Spartans and set up a state title rematch with defending state champion Lakeside in Saturday’s Division I high school championship at the Eastside Catholic School in Sammamish. The defeat of Issaquah was the second of the season for the Spartans who also notched an 18 – 8 win on May 6 at Skyline High School.

Taking a 7 – 4 halftime lead behind 3 Jacklyn Biggers goals, Bainbridge set the pace for the quarterfinal, pressuring Issaquah with offensive threats and a pestering defense.

In the second, opening goals by Issaquah’s Sophie Sheifelbein and Katie Mincin cut the Spartans’ lead to 7 – 6. Following an Emma Entress score at 19:44, Biggers notched her fourth of 5 on the night, as Bainbridge exploded for 5 unanswered goals, to seemingly put Issaquah on their heels with a 12 – 6 lead with12:24 remaining.

But as lacrosse is a game of streaks, Emily Mincin ignited a spark in Issaquah that nearly burned the Spartans undefeated record. With back-to-back goals at 10:37 and 7:20, she scored the first 2 of Issaquah’s 6 second-half goals to make it 12 – 8. Interrupted only by a Kelsey Mackin score at 5:31 that edged Bainbridge ahead 13 – 8, Issaquah then went on to tally the next four with Mincin burying the final goal deep into the Sptartans’ net with just 55 seconds remaining.

In the end, strong defensive play preserved the lead as the Spartans controlled possession, preventing Issaquah from threatening as time expired.

Biggers finished the game with 5 goals and 2 assists for Bainbridge, while Grace Deeery-Schmitt had 2 goals and Hannah Knostman, Emma Entress each had singles. For Issaquah, Sophie Schiefelbein netted 4 scores and Emily Mincin had 3, while her sister Katie Mincin scored 2. Laura Voss had 12 saves in goal for Issaquah.

On the road to the state championship, Bainbridge finished its season with wins over Mercer Island, Tacoma and Issaquah before dropping Seattle Prep in a 18 – 14 quarterfinal win last Thursday.

Issaquah finished the season 7-5-1. Before its 17 – 14 quarterfinal win over Lake Sammamish, Issaquah dropped its final two games of the season.

The Washington Lacrosse Girls Division I State Championship gets underway at 2 p.m., this Saturday, May 21 on the campus of the Eastside Catholic School in Sammamish.

SCORING HIGHLIGHTS: Bainbridge 13, Issaquah 12 – Bainbridge advances to state championship (Jacklyn Bigger, B, 5 goals, 2 assists, 2 ground balls, 5 draw controls; Grace Deery-Schmitt, B, 2 goals, 3 ground balls; Hannah Knostman, B, 1 goal, 1 assist; 4 ground balls; Emma Entress, B, 1 goal, 1 ground ball; Madeline Stevenson, B, 1 save; Sophie Schiefelbein, IS, 4 goals; Emily Mincin, IS, 3 goals; Katie Mincin, IS, 2 goals, 1 assist; Laura Voss, IS, 12 saves)

SILVERDALE – Kayla Miller came up with the ball on the opening draw of the third overtime and charged into the Klahowya zone, scoring the shorthanded game winner just 15 seconds into the mandatory sudden death period, as Bellevue East stunned the previously undefeated Eagles in the girls Division II state lacrosse semifinals, Wednesday at Central Kitsap Junior High in Silverdale.

The game winner advanced Bellevue East directly to the state championship game and erased the Eagles’ hopes of a perfect season. The berth in Saturday’s title matchup against Overlake is the first for the four-year-old Bellevue East program and first for first-year coach Craig Vanderhorn.

“This was an incredibly gutsy performance by both teams to push the game that far,” said Vanderhorn, a 10-year veteran lacrosse coach who previously led the Mercer Island girls program. “By the time we got to the third overtime it could have gone either way. Whoever got the first possession (in the third OT period) was going to win it.”

Miller’s goal came with Bellevue East playing at a three-player advantage, as she fired a rocket high on Klahowya goaltender Sheri McCarty’s stick side, burying the ball deep within the Eagles’ cage.

“Off the draw it looked like Kayla had an angle and I was thinking ‘it looks like she is going to score’,” said Vanderhorn. “That’s how she did it in the first overtime.”

After finishing the first half with a narrow 7 - 6 lead, Bellevue East gave up 7 goals in the second including Jacky Hennegan’s short-handed tying goal with 1:06 remaining to send the game into overtime.

For most of the second, Klahowya played down a player after the Eagles, who were down just 9 – 7 with 19:44 remaining, were issued their third yellow card of the game on a slashing infraction. By rule, a team plays down a player for the third and subsequent yellow cards received in a game.

Following a Rocki Winkler goal at 3:28 to bring Klahowya to within a goal, the Eagles were issued their fourth yellow card just 29 seconds later on a cross check, forcing the squad to play down two players. And with 48 seconds remaining in regulation, Klahowya was issued their third yellow card, which ultimately set the tone for the rest of the game.

In the first 3-minute overtime, with Klahowya down a mandatory three players, Bellevue East struck first on a Miller goal at 2:19 and six seconds later on a Sophie Wolz goal to make it 15 – 13. With 1:57 remaining, Klahowya’s Katie Smiley brought the game to within a goal and Hennegan forced the second extra period on a goal with 17 seconds remaining.

After changing sides in the second OT, Wolz struck first at 1:59 to put Bellevue East up, but again Hennegan came to the rescue, this time feeding a nifty pass to Kelsey Gleeson who beat Bellevue East goaltender Sam Gunnerson to send the game into decisive sudden death period.

“After a game like this it’s kind of hard to get over it and to be conscious of where we are going,” said Vanderhorn. “These girls have worked so hard all year long. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a team that has bonded like this.”

Wolze led Bellevue east with 4 goals and 5 assists, while Sullivan, Miller and Charlotte McArn all scored 3 goals and Gunnerson had 7 saves. For Klahowya, Hennegan finished with 5 goals, an assist and 5 draw controls, while Gleeson and Winkler each netted 3 goals and Sheri McCarty had 15 saves in the Eagles’ cage.

Bellevue East finished the season 10-2-0, losing two of its last three games. On April 29 Bellevue East dropped an 18 – 17 decision to Overlake, on May it defeat North Kitsap 22 – 4 and finished the season in a 13 – 12 loss to Lake Sammamish on May 6.

In the quarterfinal round, Sullivan scored 7 goals to lead Bellevue East past Bainbridge’s Division II squad 20 – 7.

Klahowya finished the season 13-1-0. The Eagles advanced to the semifinals after finishing the regular season with 12 straight wins and dropping Ballard 9 – 7 in the quarterfinals.

Bellevue East takes on Overlake in the Washington Lacrosse Division II High School State Championship, this Saturday, May 21 at Charlie Acosta Field on the campus of the Eastside Catholic School in Sammamish. The Division II game gets underway at 11 a.m.

SCORING HIGHLIGHTS: Bellevue East 17, Klahowya 16 3OT – Bellevue East advances to state championship (Sophie Wolz, BE, 4 goals, 5 assists, 4 ground balls, 2 draw controls; Camille Sullivan, BE, 3 goals, 6 ground balls, 3 draw controls; Kayla Miller, BE, 3 goals, 1 assist, 5 ground balls, 8 draw controls; Charlotte McArn, BE, 3 goals; Elena Becker, BE, 2 ground balls; 3 caused turnovers; Sam Gunnerson, BE, 7 saves; Jacky Hennegan, K, 7 goals, 1 assist, 1 ground ball, 5 draw control, 1 caused turnover; Kelsey Gleeson, K, 3 goals, 1 ground ball, 1 draw control, 1 caused turnover; Rocki Winkler, K, 3 goals, 2 assists, 1 ground ball; Sammy Borson, K, 1 goal, 2 draw controls, 1 caused turnover; Katie Smiley, K, 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 ground balls; 3 draw controls; Sheri McCarty, K, 15 saves)
